For the first time in a while, I've completed a work on an F50 canvas.
Even I find myself thinking, “How did I ever manage to paint this!” — it's a big piece.
Like a jewelry box of color, like an amusement park for living creatures — and yet not only joyful. I painted it aiming for a work where the sour and the sweet, the poison and the nectar, the shadow and the light all coexist, and out of that, rich color is born.
Within this work, which my son and I have raised together over some two and a half years, everything I have ever painted gathers and performs together.
It became a painting that made me feel, deeply, that I do not paint alone — that I am allowed to paint within my ties to my children and to the people I meet.
Collage, one of the signatures of my work, began five years ago, playing “Eric Carle” with my daughter.
For a few years now I've painted a frame around my works and let the image spill out past it. This began when my father, seeing on Instagram how the torn fragments I'd laid out on the canvas before gluing were poking beyond the edge, told me, “That's fascinating!”
And this work was born when my son, home from nursery school with time on his hands, seemed unable to release all his energy onto a small canvas — so I handed him an F50.
After that, whenever I was working on other pieces and had leftover paint with nowhere to go, this canvas took all of it in.
Born within daily life, staying by my side through the hard times and the happy ones, it is a work that has lived its way through alongside me.
This work will be shown at my solo exhibition in Ginza, opening Monday, August 3. Bold gestures and fine details are packed into this large piece, with all sorts of little creatures hidden within — I would be so happy if you could come and see it in person.
