Part of my “Beginnings” series, painted with the image of a quickening in the womb. This piece, “The Birth in the Moon,” has found a home as a kanreki (60th-birthday) gift for a mother born in the Year of the Rabbit.

As a painter, when I was asked what my own energy pours into most, what surfaced was that quickening of life.

Not so much a painting of a baby, but of the moment something is born, something begins — the excitement, and the fear and unease that well up at the very same time, and still the “here goes!” leap toward the light. I wanted to paint both sides of that, the struggle and the joy; simply, purely, out of my own wish to paint it, I let the brush run.

Honestly, I never thought this series would sell.

Some people are uneasy with wombs or babies, I thought, and since I'd poured so much feeling in, others might find it heavy — and yet I put it out on show anyway.

One thing I felt clearly: though the motif is the womb, the baby, I did not want to paint it for women alone. I wanted a painting that would settle easily with men too, that adults and children could enjoy alike — one that crosses the lines of age and gender.

Strength within softness; joy and delight, and yet hardship and loneliness, all of it there. Perhaps what I wanted to paint was something like that — something human.

It is a true honor and joy that this work found its home at her kanreki — the sixtieth year, a threshold of being reborn.
