“Ugh, I'm so tired of painting! I just want to space out…” — and thinking that, without a single thought, I pour color onto a blank white canvas.
In the final stretch toward a solo show, painting away at the finishing touches, I sometimes wear out.
When I begin I'm not thinking of anything, but as I paint a composition quietly comes into being, and by the end I'm adjusting it finer and finer.
I do it because I love it, but it takes so much time, and an enormous amount of energy.
By that point, I'm already burnt out… (laughs)
Still, I can't very well die before I finish, so I take a little break.
And this abstract — just my thoughtless, meditative doodling during that break — sometimes gets a warmer response than the paintings I burn myself out over for half a year.
This is one of those.
